The List of Courses Provided by the Virtual University of the Third Age

Courses are part of studying programme called “The World Around Us” which is provided by distance learning of VU3A. This programme contains of group lectures, individual student’s work, communication with lector and other activities, which are accessible via the Internet.

Astronomy

The cycles of lectures introduce students to astronomy. The history of sun clocks is presented, starting in antique times continuing till present. In the following part of the lecture the famous astronomy scientists are presented with the focus on those from the times of famous Czech ruler Rudolf II. This topic was chosen because of the International year of Astronomy announced by UNESCO in 2009.

 

Ethics as the solution of today’s society crisis

The cycle of six lectures introduces students to the problematic of ethics. It deals with the problems of transformation of our society during the last two decades when the humans relationships has been worsen, and introduces ethics and morality as the way out of the situation.

Forestry

Course firstly provides an introduction to the forestry from the general view and then presents the specifics of this discipline. The importance of soil as the base for sustainable output in the forest is mentioned. The lectures are followed by related topics as the protection of the landscape, water management, fish farming etc..

 

Hunting and biodiversity

“Hunting” is a special field typical for Czech culture. This course was created to present the history of this interesting specialization, virtually brings the students to the nature and animals, but also introduces the unique culture connected to hunting in the Czech surroundings.

 

Growing and use of medicinal mushrooms

The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with the cultivation of edible and medicinal mushrooms. It also points to differences in cultivation practices of various groups of cultivated medicinal mushrooms and their active substances. The important part of the course contains instructions how to plant and how to prepare the selected edible mushrooms in the domestic conditions.

 

Decision support and management

The main aim of this course is to introduce to the students mathematics models which supports decision making. Students will learn the basic concepts and algorithms of individual areas which were selected with regard to their applicability in practice.
